Have you heard of chakras but aren't quite sure what they are? This guide explains everything — simply and accessibly — so you can start working with your body's energy today.
What is a Chakra?
The word "chakra" comes from Sanskrit and means "wheel" or "disk." In the yogic and Ayurvedic traditions of ancient India, chakras are energy centers located along the spine. There are seven main ones, each associated with specific physical, emotional, and spiritual functions.
When a chakra is balanced, energy flows freely, and you feel good in your body and mind. When it's blocked or imbalanced, physical or emotional discomfort can arise.
The 7 Main Chakras
1. The Root Chakra (Muladhara) — Red
Location: Base of the spine
Associated with: Security, stability, basic needs, survival
When balanced: You feel grounded, secure, and stable
When blocked: Anxiety, fears, financial insecurity, leg and foot problems
To rebalance: Walk barefoot in nature, meditate with red stones like red jasper or hematite
2. The Sacral Chakra (Svadhisthana) — Orange
Location: Lower abdomen, below the navel
Associated with: Creativity, emotions, sexuality, pleasure
When balanced: You feel creative, passionate, and connected to your emotions
When blocked: Lack of creativity, repressed emotions, relationship problems
To rebalance: Dance, artistic expression, orange crystals like carnelian
3. The Solar Plexus Chakra (Manipura) — Yellow
Location: Stomach, above the navel
Associated with: Self-confidence, personal power, willpower
When balanced: You feel confident, motivated, and in control of your life
When blocked: Lack of confidence, digestive problems, feeling powerless
To rebalance: Physical exercise, citrine, lemon or bergamot essential oils
4. The Heart Chakra (Anahata) — Green
Location: Center of the chest
Associated with: Love, compassion, healing, relationships
When balanced: You easily love and accept others and yourself
When blocked: Relationship difficulties, resentment, heart or lung problems
To rebalance: Compassion meditation, rose quartz, jade, rose essential oils
5. The Throat Chakra (Vishuddha) — Light Blue
Location: Throat
Associated with: Communication, self-expression, truth
When balanced: You express yourself clearly and authentically
When blocked: Difficulty expressing yourself, frequent sore throats, fear of judgment
To rebalance: Singing, journaling, lapis lazuli, aquamarine
6. The Third Eye Chakra (Ajna) — Indigo
Location: Between the eyes, in the center of the forehead
Associated with: Intuition, wisdom, clairvoyance, imagination
When balanced: You trust your intuition and see things clearly
When blocked: Lack of intuition, headaches, mental confusion
To rebalance: Meditation, amethyst, fluorite, lavender or frankincense essential oils
7. The Crown Chakra (Sahasrara) — Violet or White
Location: Top of the head
Associated with: Spirituality, divine connection, awakening, pure consciousness
When balanced: You feel connected to something greater than yourself, at peace
When blocked: Feeling of disconnection, lack of meaning, spiritual depression
To rebalance: Deep meditation, clear quartz, white quartz, silence and contemplation
How to Rebalance Your Chakras Daily
You don't need to be an expert to work with your chakras. Here are some simple and accessible practices:
- Meditation — 10 minutes a day of guided chakra meditation can make a big difference
- Crystals — place stones corresponding to each chakra on your body during meditation
- Aromatherapy — certain essential oils are associated with each chakra and can help activate them
- Yoga — certain yoga postures target specific chakras
- Visualization — visualize the color of the chakra you want to work with and imagine a bright light in that area
- Cleansing your space — an energetically clean space promotes chakra balance. Incense smoke or a salt lamp can help cleanse the energy of a room
Where to Start?
If you're a beginner, start with the root chakra. It's the foundation of the entire system — if you don't feel grounded and secure, it will be difficult to work with the upper chakras. Once you feel stable, you can gradually move up to the higher chakras.
The important thing is to be consistent and trust the process. Chakras don't rebalance in a day — it's a long-term journey that requires patience and constancy.
